A vampire isn't a person at all. It may have the movements, the memories, even the personality of the person that it took over, but it's still a demon at the core, there is no halfway. Giles, "Angel"

Even if the show follows most of the traditionnal rules concerning vampires, they appear in a more modern way. As the time passes by, they adapt to their new envirronment. They are more modern city predators than blood-sucking lovers. Cities gave the vampires plenty of opportunities to live comfortably. First, the night life. People going out. And so night clubs. It's easy for them to seduce lonely clubbers to then feed on them. Also, it's easy for them to live underground to avoid the sun light.

Faith staking a vampThese vampires can be killed by a stake in the heart, of beheaded. They actually turn into dust.

They are burned by sun light, holy water and holy objects. These are commonly used to face them.

The sun light is a weird thing in the show, as you need "direct light" to kill a vampire. So cloudy daylight isn't enough, even if it will burn them. There a question of intensity. So they can drive blackened windows car for exemple.

In Buffy the Vampire SLayer, they created weapons such as the crossbow with wood sticks, holy water pistolets...

You can also use garlic. Vampires can't enter private houses unless they are invited. But once they are, they are welcome to come back any time they want. There's a curse able to stop that invitation.

Spike catching BuffyThey change into a "game face" (animal look, yellow eyes, long fangs) before biting. It seems to be natural state, as the Master, and sometimes others stay like that most of the time.

It seems to be some contradictions in the physiology of the vampires. They are undeads, so they move like humans, but their heart isn't beating. They are cold. But they have a reflex breath, even if it has no fonction. It allows them to smoke. It's a sort of comfort for them. They can also drink and eat. Their senses are more accure then humans. They see really well in the dark, smell any trace of blood, and hear any noise. They are also strong, and have a fast healing process.

The hugly MasterThe vamp love birdsAt the beginning, the vampires are ruled by the Master, and they are all conformed to Giles's definition of  vampires: "demons at core". They spend their time feeding on humans, trying to destroy the slayer or the world. Darla is the first vampire to show a more "human side", even if it's for a devil purpose, kill Buffy. She obviously loves Angel, and they were lovers in the past. Then the Master cries Darla's death, who was his "favorite for 400 years". But it could be forgotten, but then Spike and Drusilla arrived. And they "stink of humanity", they "care for each other".

Spike with his game faceDarlaSeeing that, it seems that the older a vampire is, the most likely he is to show affection, and emotions.

Even if nothing says clearly that there are masters, and that some vampires are just living alone, it seems that a vampire takes the head of the vampire clan. At the beginning was the Master, a very very old vampire. When the Master died, hi Annointed One just took his place. But Spike thought he was useless and killed him, becoming the boss of Sunnydale vampires. It's really a master/servants relationship, as the vampires take orders of the Master, and if they fail in their mission, they offer their life to the Master, who usually takes it.

At a smaller scale, a vampire that turns on a human becomes his sire. To do so, he usually drains the human, then make him drink his blood. It seems to be a certain delay then before the transformation: Buffy spends night waiting for some new vampires to rise from their grave.
